What's the Weather Really like?...

HiLine Lake weather is simliar to other places you've heard about: "If you don't like it, just wait ten minutes." Although an old saying, it does hold true for most places and Alaska is no exception. Being prepared with the correct gear for the changing weather is the key to a pleasant trip.

We offer two types of weather information on this page: 1) Today's current weather from the Skwentna area, north of HiLine Lake and 2) Historical data averaged over the past 3 years.

For weekly weather updates you can view the "Home" page. It is updated every Friday morning with the past week's weather.

If you need flight weather go to the Current pilot's weather data.

Lowest Low Temp = -43 deg. F below on 2/2/99
Highest High Temp. = 84 deg. F on 6/30/02

The Summer Season: Our summer season is from June 15th through August 31st with the following weather (based on an average of the past 3 years):

June

Average Daytime highs = 72 deg. F
Average Nighttime lows = 45 deg. F
Daylight hours = 15 - 18.5
Lowest temperature = 37 deg. F (6/27/02)
Highest temperature = 84 deg. F (6/30/02

July

Average Daytime highs = 67 deg. F
Average Nighttime lows = 48 deg. F
Daylight hours = 18.5 - 17
Lowest temperature = 41 deg. F (7/4/03)
Highest temperature = 87 deg. F (7/14/03)

August

Average Daytime highs = 68 deg. F
Average Nighttime lows = 48 deg. F
Daylight hours = 17 - 14
Lowest temperature = 39 deg. F (8/14/02)
Highest temperature = 80 deg. F (8/3/02)

The sun provides almost continous light during the summer with June 22nd being the summer soltice (the longest day) when we have over 19 hours of daylight. And, yes, Alaska does have mosquitoes as in many other places. Ours can be bothersome without the right protection.

The Winter Season: The two months we operate during the winter are February and March with the following weather (based on an average of the past 3 years):

February

Average Daytime highs = 26 deg. F
Average Nighttime lows = 16 deg. F
Daylight hours = 8 - 9.5
Lowest temperature = -24 deg. F (2/22/02)
Highest temperature = 40 deg. F (2/16/03)

March

Average Daytime highs = 28 deg. F
Average Nighttime lows = 13 deg. F
Daylight hours = 9.5 - 13
Lowest temperature = -16 deg. F (3/5/02)
Highest temperature = 45 deg. F (3/26/01)

Winter days are short only during December and January. February and March days are comparable to that of the lower 48 latitudes, about 9 hours of daylight. It is not uncommon to have very cold nighttime temperatures thus, the proper gear is a must.
